The start line has been moved from Bayfront Festival Park to behind the DECC on Harbor Drive. In addition to Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, the course for the William A.Other changes and additions for Grandma’s Marathon weekend to note: Panelists scheduled to appear include Ed Walton of Black Men Run, Katia Lopez-Petrovich of Latinas on the Move, Alicia Kozlowski of the Indigenous women’s running community KwePack, and Jake Fedorowski of the LGBTQIA+ running and walking club Seattle Frontrunners. "We are doing Grandma's because it's the marathon we do together.The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Roundtable is new to Grandma’s Marathon weekend this year. "We aren't doing a lot of marathons because we love marathons," Matt says. Mostly, race weekend is a chance to see parents and old friends and then run alongside brothers. "It ensures that we're going to be home every year.'" A tradition was never the plan, the brothers say, but now the juggernaut can't be stopped even as times slow and joints grow noisier. "It's the best $300 she ever invested," Alan says. Back in 1988, the race offered lifetime memberships to runners for $100, and so Mary took advantage of the deal and bought three of them. Since then, Jim has collected 37 Grandma's medals, Alan has 34, and Matt has 31. The brothers began competing in Grandma's, which traces the north shore of Lake Superior, as teenagers.
